July 8: Welcome to the Dordogne Region of France / Short Ride and Welcome Dinner
We will meet you at 12 noon at the Bordeaux TGV Train Station and transfer you to the village of St. Cyprien and our charming boutique four-star hotel that was formerly an abbey. Following check-in for the next two nights, assemble your bike with the assistance of our professional mechanics or fine tune your rental bike before enjoying a short spin to loosen up. This evening, relax and enjoy our “Welcome Meeting and Dinner.”
July 9: Montignac and the Lascaux Caves
After breakfast and a “cafe au lait,” you’ll ride some of the most stunning roads of the entire week as we cycle through the Vezere River Valley with it’s limestone cliffs, fortified castles, and some of “France’s most beautiful villages” such as Limeul and St. Leon-sur-Vezere. Following our arrival in Montignac, we’ll visit the world-famous Lascaux Caves. Discovered in 1940 by a group of teenagers, these caves (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) contain about 600 wall paintings and about 1,500 engravings depicting prehistoric life. This evening, explore the local brasseries for dinner on your own.
July 10: St. Cyprien to Sarlat / “Most Beautiful Villages of the Dordogne”
Following a hearty breakfast overlooking the French countryside, discover some of the most beautiful villages in France as we ride to such destinations as Beynac-et-Cazenac, la Roque Gageac, Domme, and others before arriving into the “crown jewel” of the Dordogne, Sarlat! Today will be filled with a lot of “WOW!” moments as you ride the spectacular roads and experience these charming villages firsthand. Following check-in for the next three nights at our deluxe hotel in Sarlat, catch the live finish of Stage 6 on TV before reliving the day during our group dinner.
July 11: Dordogne Ride / Tour de France Stage 8 in Sarlat
Today you will experience the Tour de France up-close as the race passes through Sarlat before heading to Bergerac for the finish of Stage 8! We’ll begin our day by riding through the Dordogne River valley before returning to Sarlat for all of the Tour de France festivities. Following lunch, get ready to witness all the craziness and pageantry of the Publicity Caravan. Afterwards, cheer on the Yellow Jersey and your other favorites as they race all-out through town! This evening, celebrate your day at the Tour de France with our group dinner in town. “C’est parfait!”
July 12: Castles, Castles, and More Castles / Farewell Dinner
Our final day of cycling in the Dordogne will feature visiting the region’s most famous castles at Castelnaud-la-Chapelle, Fayrac Marqueyssac and the Chateau les Milandes, which was Josephine Baker’s castle. Following our visits, we’ll ride to another one of “France’s most beautiful villages,” Belves (the name of Belvès literally means “beautiful view” in the local Occitan dialect), and enjoy lunch in the center of town at a local cafe. Afterwards, we’ll cycle back to our hotel to catch the live finish of today’s stage 9 before enjoying our “Farewell Dinner!”
